  5.                      RUSSIAN LANGUAGE LEARNER PROGRAM 
  6.                     VERSION 2

  9.     With this program you can use your computer to study Russian 
  10.     vocabulary words, idioms and phrases from any textbook, study guide, 
  11.       story, newspaper or article. If you are studying from a textbook 
  12.       you can make a separate file for each chapter. You can enter all 
  13.      of the different verb forms, regular and irregular. You can enter 
  14.     idioms and other expressions.

  16.                   SHAREWARE
  17.  
  18.     This program is not free. It is shareware. This means that you
  19.     may try it out before you decide whether or not to buy it. After
  20.     you have tried it out, if you intend to keep using it you must
  21.     register it by sending $14.95 plus $1.75 for postage and supplies

  27.     When you register you will receive the fully functional version,
  28.     as well as a game you have not played before. 
  29.  
  30.     You may give the program to as many people as you wish. When you
  31.     do so you must transfer all the files on the disk or in the .ZIP
  32.     file. Each user must send in the fee unless he or she is a member
  33.     of the same household or family as someone who has registered.
  34.  
  35.     You can pay by check or use Visa or Mastercard. Use the form
  36.     called REGISTER.DOC, which you can print from the Runme program,
  37.     or send me the information in a letter. If charging, be sure to
  38.     include amount, card number, expiration date and signature.
  39.  
  40.     I receive no other income from my programming. Equipment costs,
  41.     supplies, mailings and BBS upload time are all paid out of my
  42.     pocket. Therefore, if you use and enjoy the program, please send
  43.     the registration fee.

  45.                 INSTALLATION
  46.  
  47.     You can run the program from a floppy disk or copy it to a 
  48.       hard disk if you have one. The files created and used by program 
  49.       must be in the same directory or on the same floppy disk as the 
  50.     program. These files have a ".rus" suffix in their name.

  52.     If your floppy gets full you can either delete files or copy 
  53.     the program files to a new floppy and continue to make new data 
  54.     files. 
  55.  
  56.       Under normal circumstances, you will make data files before 
  57.       you use the test option. However, everyone is usually 
  58.       interested in seeing how the test option works first, so I 
  59.       have included vocabulary files made with the program so 
  60.       that you can immediately see how the test option works if you 
  61.       want to and what kind of files you can create.

  63.       For the following instructions, type the word or symbol between 
  64.       the "< >" marks, but not the "< >" symbols.                    
  65.  
  66.       If you have only a floppy drive, insert the disk into it. Type
  67.     <RunmeR> or <Russian2> and press <Enter>.
  68.  
  69.       If you have a hard drive you should use it for the program as 
  70.       it loads much faster from a hard drive. If you have this program 
  71.     on a floppy disk, insert the disk into the floppy disk drive. 
  72.     At the DOS prompt type <MD\Russian>. Then type <CD\Russian>. Then 
  73.     type <COPY [disk drive letter]:*.*>. If you downloaded the files 
  74.     from a BBS, you have already unzipped them and you are now ready 
  75.     to follow the instructions below.

  78.                          THE UTILITIES
  79.  
  80.     The program is very straight forward. To start it choose
  81.     option <3> from the RUNME menu or by typing <Russian2> at the
  82.     DOS prompt and pressing <Enter>. You will see the title
  83.     page. Press <Enter> for the next menu. 
  84.  
  85.     If you select option <2> from the next menu you will see the
  86.     maintenance utilities. Using these utilities you can create, 
  87.     change, add to, print and look at files of the words and phrases
  88.     on which you will test yourself. In the unregistered version of
  89.     this program, the add to option is disabled and the option for
  90.     creating a file limits the file to 10 entries.
  91.  
  92.       Select one of the choices. (Choice <4> is easiest.) You will 
  93.     then be asked for a file name. No matter which choice you 
  94.     selected you can call up a directory of the Russian vocabulary 
  95.     files. You only have to type in the name, without typing the suffix.
  96.   
  97.         If you choose to create a file, using option <1>, the program 
  98.         will check if a file exists with the name of the file you 
  99.         have chosen to create. If so, you will be given the option of 
  100.         overwriting the existing file or choosing another name for 
  101.         your new file. If you choose creating or adding to an existing 
  102.         file you will be asked to type in an English word or expression. 
  103.         Do so and press <Enter>. You will then be asked for the Russian 
  104.         word or expression. 
  105.  
  106.       When it's time to enter something in Russian, a keyboard template 
  107.       will appear to show you which key to press for each character.
  108.     The Russian keyboard is set up as phonetically as possible. For
  109.     example, pressing the "F" key gets you the Russian letter that
  110.     sounds like an "F". 
  111.       After typing the Russian word or expression press <Enter> again. 
  112.     You will be asked to confirm your entry. When you are finished 
  113.     with the file press <Esc>.
  114.  
  115.       If you choose to edit a file, the computer will show you the 
  116.       current entries one by one. The bottom of the screen tells you 
  117.       what to do.
  118.  
  119.       Your entries can be up to 32 characters long. This means that 
  120.       you can have multiple answers by separating them with a semicolon.
  121.     When you test yourself, you have the option of having the computer 
  122.     treat your answer as correct if you type any one of the possible 
  123.     correct answers.

  125.     You can distinguish English nouns from verbs one of two ways. 
  126.     Either put nouns in one file and verbs in another, or use the
  127.     article with nouns and the infinitive form with verbs. For
  128.     example: "to play" for the verb and "the play" for the noun.

  130.     The file display option prompts you to press <Enter> if there 
  131.     is more than one page of words and expressions in a file.
  132.  
  133.       Pressing <Esc> one or two times always takes you to the main 
  134.       menu.

  137.                              TESTING YOURSELF
  138.  
  139.     Back at the main menu choose option <1>. You will then be asked
  140.     if you want the exact answer option or the multiple answer option.
  141.     If you select the multiple answer option, then if there is more
  142.     than one correct answer, the program will treat your answer as
  143.     correct if you type any one of the correct answers. Also, with
  144.     this option the computer will ignore punctuation, capitalization
  145.     and spacing, even if there are not multiple possible answers.
  146.     If you choose the exact answer option, then everything in your
  147.     answer must be exactly what the computer has on file.
  148.     
  149.     Next you will be asked which file you want to be tested on.
  150.     Type in the name but not the extension and press <Enter>.

  152.       By this time you will have learned that somewhere on the screen, 
  153.       in the middle of the screen or on the bottom, you are told what 
  154.       you can do next.
  155.  
  156.       The next menu lets you select two different types of tests, 
  157.       multiple choice or fill in. Multiple choice lets you get 
  158.       acquainted with the vocabulary. Fill in really tests your 
  159.       knowledge of the vocabulary.

  161.       The next menu lets you select the direction of the translation 
  162.       test. Your choices are obvious.
  163.  
  164.       Taking the test is also obvious. If you have chosen the multiple 
  165.       choice test then press the number of the answer you select. For a 
  166.       fill in test, type your answer and press <Enter>. When you have 
  167.       to fill in an answer in the foreign language you chose, the bottom 
  168.     of the screen will tell you which keys to press to print 
  169.     the Russian characters.

  171.     Each time that you test yourself the entries are randomly mixed
  172.     (and if you are taking a multiple choice test so are the answer
  173.     choices).

  175.       Pressing <Esc> always takes you to the next previous menu. You 
  176.       can change the type of test or the direction of translation at 
  177.       any time. While you can switch back and forth, the program will 
  178.       test you on all words and phrases in both directions. When you 
  179.       are finished with all the vocabulary in one direction the program 
  180.       will change to the other direction, having  told you about this 
  181.       change at the bottom of your screen.

  183.       After you have finished the test, the program will take you back 
  184.       to the first test menu. You can select another file for testing, 
  185.     look at your results, or retest yourself on wrong answers. Unless 
  186.     you have a perfect score, press <2>.

  188.       Either before or after you look at the results you can retest
  189.       yourself. Of course, the retest option only tests you on the 
  190.       words and phrases that you missed. Other than that the retest 
  191.       option works just like the test option.

  194.                     PRINTING THE INSTRUCTIONS

  196.       If you want to print out these instructions, select option <2> 
  197.     from the RUNME menu or type the following at the DOS prompt:
